As scenes of awe, rather than efficacy, and of force rather than right, the new walls stage sovereign power in its most theological dross. We are thus reminded again that waning state sovereignty often reveals sovereignty’s theological aspect more directly even as it decants the two powers it was originally established to contain, religion as well as political economy.
